Gullye (pronounced gully, as in the Hindi gali, a narrow lane) was founded in 2025 by Chetnnya Jain, who grew up in Jaipur, India and now lives in Washington, US. The pieces are made by hand in the workshops of the old Pink City of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
Handcrafted bags and jewelry, made in small editions with artisans whose skill has passed through families for generations. Nothing here is mass-produced, and nothing pretends to be something it is not.
Our brass is shaped by lost-wax casting, one of the oldest metalworking methods still practiced. A form is sculpted in wax, encased, then replaced with molten brass poured by hand. Relief is raised from behind the metal, hammered outward a little at a time. Stones are pressed into place, never glued. A single bag takes 22 to 30 days across seven stages.
We keep batches small, three to five pieces a month for a single design. We work directly with the workshops, with no middlemen in between, and we pay fairly for skilled work.
This is slower, and it costs more. That is simply the honest price of work done by hand.
I spent my working life in technology, managing programs. I left it to do this.
What struck me after I moved to the United States was how much extraordinary handwork from home arrived with no name attached to it. The maker disappeared. The story got flattened into "exotic" or "ethnic." And the money went to everyone except the hands that did the work.
I am not here to sell you a fantasy about a faraway place. I am here to show you something real, made by someone real, and to tell you the truth about it.
