Care

This piece mixes Enamel, Brass, and Beads.

Storage: Always hang them up or lay them perfectly flat. If you bunch them in a bag, the chains will knot.

Moisture: Keep dry to prevent the brass chains from tarnishing.

Impact: Enamel is glass-based powder fused to metal; dropping them on a hard floor can crack the bird's coating.

  • The Grey Ghost.

Meenakari is usually known for bright reds and greens. To create this sophisticated "Graphite" grey is a challenge in chemistry.

Master Artisan Ratan must mix the enamel powders precisely to get this stormy, monochromatic shade. The application is even harder. The bird is not flat; it is a 3D sculpture. Ratan has to paint the enamel over the curve of the wing and the chest without the color running or pooling.

Once fired, he attaches the "waterfall" a series of hand-linked chains that mimic the bird's long tail feathers. It is a piece that balances the stillness of the sculpture with the movement of the chains.

    Silent bird. Loud statement.
