Are the stones real gemstones?
No. They are high-quality glass stones, set individually into the brass. The deep color and irregular light-catch are the point, and we never call them gemstones.

No. The rigid structure means most smartphones will not fit. At 5"L × 1.25"W × 4"H it holds evening essentials, lipstick, cards, keys, and a compact.
How do I care for the stone-setting?

The brass frame is cast first. Then, over about thirty days, a stone-setter places nearly five hundred glass stones into the metal by hand, one at a time. Each is held the old way, with gold pressed around its edge, not glued. It is the longest piece to make in the collection.
