How is the engraving made?
The bird-and-vine motif is engraved directly into the solid brass by Master Artisan Vereen, a fourth-generation engraver, using a small iron chisel and a wooden mallet, with no stencils or machinery. One side takes more than four thousand individual taps. No two pieces are identical.
Does it come with a strap?
Yes, a detachable gold-tone chain for crossbody or shoulder wear. The ball clasp keeps your essentials secure.
The story
Master Artisan Vereen is a fourth-generation metal engraver. In a trade that has mostly moved to machines, he still works by hand. The solid brass is cast first; the real labor begins once the metal cools. With a small iron chisel and a wooden mallet, he taps the bird-and-vine design directly into the hard surface, one strike at a time.
There are no stencils and no undo. Just rhythm. One side of this bag takes more than four thousand individual taps of the hammer, and a single slip would ruin it. One piece takes about twenty days.
When you hold it, you are holding twenty days of one person's attention. Some things cannot be mass-produced. They have to be made.
