What is toile?
Toile de Jouy is a French textile tradition from 1760: single-color illustrative scenes printed on cream cloth. The print here is a tropical toile, palms, parrots, and exotic flowers in black on cream.
How is this different from The Arbor and The Merlot?
The silhouette and dimensions are identical across all three. The difference is the surface, the Arbor is forest-green vegan leather, the Merlot is burgundy vegan leather, and the Toile is jacquard in a black-and-cream tropical scene. The Toile is the most narrative of the three.

The story
What made toile extraordinary was not the color but the restraint. One color only, black on cream, the entire lush scene held in a single tone. The discipline makes your imagination do the rest: you see the parrot in the palm and fill in the colors yourself.
The Toile brings that to a structured day bag with an arched handle. Same nine inches of capacity, same curved handle, same detachable strap as the others in the line, but the fabric changes everything. Every surface tells a story. The palms lean. The parrot watches. The flowers open fully, even in black.

Gullye makes sculptural pieces by hand, in small editions, with master artisans in Jaipur. Once an edition sells out, it is retired.
The specification
The Toile is jacquard on a cream ground, and the cream base needs careful handling to stay clean. To clean, press the exterior gently with a soft damp cloth. Do not hand wash, machine wash, tumble dry, or dry clean. Keep moisture, makeup, and perfume off the fabric, and avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the black print. Store in the Gullye dust bag.

In 1760, a fabric mill opened in the French village of Jouy-en-Josas with one idea: to print the whole world onto a single color of cloth. Scenes of distant lands, palm trees, exotic birds, tropical gardens most of Europe had never seen, rendered in a single ink on cream cotton. The French nobility loved it at once, and toile de Jouy became the fabric of the finest rooms in Europe. Houses like Dior still use it.
