Toile de Jouy was born in 1760 in a French mill that wanted to capture the whole world on fabric. Palms. Parrots. Exotic blooms. A paradise drawn in black on cream. This bag carries that same ambition the arch handle silhouette, the full tropical scene, the print that stops people mid-sentence.

Care

The Toile is jacquard fabric on a cream ground. The black print is rich and the cream base requires careful handling to stay clean.

To clean, press gently with a soft damp cloth on the exterior. Do not hand wash, machine wash, tumble dry, or dry clean. Avoid direct contact with moisture, makeup, and perfume spray. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the black print. When not in use, stuff lightly to maintain the structured form and store in a cool dry place, ideally in the Gullye dust bag.

FAQs

What is toile and why is this bag named for it?
Toile de Jouy is a French textile tradition dating to 1760 single-colour illustrative scenes printed on cream cloth, depicting exotic landscapes, tropical flora, and distant worlds. The print on this bag is a tropical toile: palm trees, parrots, and exotic flowers in black on cream. The name is not borrowed. It is accurate. This fabric belongs to that tradition.
What is the bag made from?
The Toile is made from jacquard fabric in a tropical toile print, fully lined with soft cotton. The arched handle and structure are consistent with the other Ellara silhouettes in the collection. No animal products are used in its construction.
How is this different from The Arbor and The Merlot?
The silhouette and dimensions are identical across all three. The difference is the surface. The Arbor is deep forest green vegan leather. The Merlot is cherry burgundy vegan leather. The Toile is jacquard fabric in a black and cream tropical scene. Same bag, three completely different personalities. The Toile is the most narrative of the three.
What fits inside?
At 9 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall, The Toile is a full day bag. Phone, wallet, keys, makeup pouch, sunglasses, and everything else a day requires. The zip-top closure keeps it all secure while you move.
How do I carry it?
Carry it by the flat curved top handle in the hand or over the arm. Attach the detachable crossbody strap for a hands-free day. The print reads equally well either way the whole scene is visible from a distance.
How do I care for the fabric?
Wipe gently with a soft damp cloth for light cleaning. Do not hand wash, machine wash, tumble dry, or dry clean. Keep away from direct moisture and prolonged sunlight to preserve the black print on the cream ground. Stuff lightly when not in use to maintain the structured form.

  • In 1760, a German entrepreneur named Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf opened a fabric mill in the French village of Jouy-en-Josas. He had one idea: to print the whole world onto a single colour of cloth. Scenes of distant lands palm trees, exotic birds, tropical gardens that most of Europe had never seen and could only imagine rendered in a single ink on cream cotton. The French nobility loved it immediately. Toile de Jouy became the fabric of the finest rooms in Europe. Marie Antoinette had it. The houses of Versailles had it. Dior still uses it.

What made toile extraordinary was not the colour it was the restraint. One colour only. Black on cream. The entire scene, however lush, however full of life, held within a single tone. The discipline made the imagination do the rest. You see the parrot in the palm and you fill in the colours yourself. That is the genius of toile: it gives you the outline and trusts you to complete it.

The Toile brings that tradition to the arch handle silhouette of the Gullye Ellara collection. Same nine inches of structured day-bag capacity. Same curved top handle. Same detachable crossbody strap. But the fabric changes everything where The Arbor is solid and grounded in forest green, The Toile is narrative. Every surface tells a story. The palm trees lean. The parrot watches. The flowers open fully, even in black.

This is the bag for the woman who has been to that garden, or is planning to go.
The whole world on one bag.
